Student mentoring programs are an effective way to develop an enriching learning environment in California schools. Research
has shown that student mentoring programs increase attendance and improve academic performance. Mentored youths are 52 percent
less likely to skip school, 46 percent less likely to experiment with drugs and 27 percent less likely to drink alcohol.
Thousands of children in California are in need of volunteer mentors, and mentoring programs and coalitions throughout the
state are committed to meeting this demand. Mentoring partnerships between business and education provide a vital channel
for businesses to support young Californians in their communities.
For years, Californians have reached out to their next generation by providing meaningful encouragement, motivation and hope
as volunteer mentors. National Mentoring Month increases public awareness of the need for volunteer mentors, and offers recognition
and gratitude to the countless men and women who donate their time as mentors throughout California.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim January 2004, as "California
Mentoring Month."
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this the
seventh day of January 2004.
/s/ Arnold Schwarzenegger
Governor of California
